Low Carb Diets to Treat Diabetes

The mot popular article in the New York Times yesterday decried medical weight loss using a low carbohydrate diet to treat diabetes.

1. Diabetes frequently goes into remission with medical weight loss using a low carbohydrate diet.
Many people no longer require the prescription medications they are on to keep their blood sugar in the normal range after this protocol. At Rainier Medical Weigh Loss and Wellness, many patients have been able to stope the had the medications they had been told they would require for the rest of their lives.

2.  Medically supervised weight loss is not being offered to patients by their physicians.
For whatever reasons, most patients are not being told about this treatment option by their physicians.   They may be told to lose weight, but not referred to a physician specializing in weight loss.  In this article, the authors described a medical conference- the venue for discussing treatments, as not including education on medically supervised diets. Why is that?  Could it be that it does not make anyone any money?  There is no pharmaceutical or medical device company making a profit.  This is a very inexpesnisve treatment, so no lobbysits behind it.  A low carbohydrate diet is a very old, low tech treatment.

3.  Medically supervised weight loss is a very inexpensive treatment option.
Relative to most medical treatments, medications, and devices, medically sueprvised weight loss is very inexpensive- and it improves the underlying cause of the problem, instead of just treating the symptoms.  Insulin, bariatric surgery, prescription pharmaceuticals including weight loss medications, are frequently on patents or procedural and therefore expensive.  A low carbohydrate diet, even if using medical prepackaged, FDA regulated foods, costs $4 a meal at Rainier Medical Weight Loss and Wellness, plus professional services that are usually covered under health insurance.

Medically supervised weight loss under the direction of Dr. Valerie Sutherland is available in Tacoma and Puyallup.  Dr. Sutherland is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.  Programs include nutrition, behavior and exerise as well.  Most health insurance is accpeted.   New patients welcomed.
