Non Bariatric Surgery Program
Take control of your preparation for surgery. There are many things you can do to optimize your health for the best surgery experience and outcome possiible. This program is designed for people who need to have surgery and their BMI is over 35 or they have been advised by their surgeon that weight loss is recommended. For all surgery, excess weight increases the risk of general anesthesia. For certain surgeries, excess weight can increase surgical time, risk, complications, pain, cost, and recovery time. In some cases, surgery may even be withheld if a BMI is over a certain threshold such as 35-40. The most common surgeries for which a certain BMI is required are orthopedic surgeries, but outcomes may be improved for many surgeries, such as abominal, spine, or cancer surgeries.
The nutrition, medication, activity, and pace of weight loss will all be specifically designed to optimize your surgical outcome. Your surgical date will be targeted for your weight loss goals. Your metabolic health, such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and medication regimen, will also be optimized for the best surgery experience possible. The program also includes "prehabilitation" at Rainier Medical Health and Fitness with our exercise professionals, which can improve surgical recovery and outcome. In these visits, functional movement, core strengthening, muscle imbalances will be targeted.
The providers at Rainier Medical will communicate and coordinate with your surgeon through our state of the art electronic medical record, so your progress and results are available.
Peri Bariatric Surgery Program
Having bariatric surgery? Had bariatric surgery recently and your weight loss is than expected? Are you experiencing weight regain 18 months or more after bariatric surgery? Medical treatment for obesity before and after surgery may reduce your surgical risk and optimize your long term outcome. Supervised medical weight loss may be required prior to insurance coverage for bariatric surgery. Weight loss before surgery may make the surgery shorter and lower risk. Medical weight loss following surgery may improve the total weight loss. Deliberate nutrition and exercise following surgery may minimize excessive loss of lean body mass. Weight regain happens in a significant percentage of people following bariatric surgery and complex physiologic mechanisms contribute to this. Medical weight management may reduce weight regain so that the weight loss achieved with surgery is more durbale.
The nutrition, medication, activity, and pace of weight loss will all be specifically designed with your overall weight trend in mind. Your surgical procedure, post surgical dietary restrictions, micronutrient supplements and laboratory monitoring will be included. The program also includes individuaized exercise assessment and training at Rainier Medical Health and Fitness with our exercise professionals. In these visits, functional movement, core strengthening, fitness and muscle imbalances will be targeted. Sometimes, after bariatric surgery, skeletal muscle mass needs to be toned, or a person finds their exercise regimen can be changed.
The providers at Rainier Medical will communicate and coordinate with your bariatric surgeon through our state of the art electronic medical record, so your care is coordinated.
